US Armed Forces Executes Deadly Attack in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities
As stated by a senior defense official, the US armed forces executed a fatal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.
“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no US military forces were injured.”
Background and Prior Strikes
This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Just on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Tactics Amid Pressure
The government has encountered increasing pressure to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a top official seemed to confirm a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the leader “aims to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
