Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth left Quintana Roo on the 20th of March.

A extensive search and rescue operation is currently under way in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of lost boats transporting relief goods journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Naval Search Operations Deployed

Mexico has sent naval assets and search planes to locate the two vessels, which were had on board no fewer than 9 personnel, as stated by a official statement.

The boats had been expected to arrive in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.

Background of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

Cuba has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through multiple power outages across the country.

"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with suitable safety systems and signalling equipment," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their consular staff.

"We are working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Recent Relief Mission

Just days before, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the country.

That vessel, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" after the vessel in which Castro came back to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bicycles and food.

Broader International Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the country began.

Global bodies have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with more than 50k surgical procedures called off in Cuba amid power shortages.

Foreign policy pressure have increased over the past months, with comments from several leaders highlighting the complicated nature of bilateral relations.

In response to recent comments, a senior Cuban official stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that early stages of discussions had begun, although their current progress remains unclear.

The Mexican navy said it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to find the sailboats and ensure the well-being of the people on board.

At this time, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
