The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
