The English Team to Start the European Championship 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium

The English squad will initiate their 2028 European Championship journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they secure the anticipated passage for a competition staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

City’s stadium has not staged an English men’s game since eight years ago, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is expected to host the England side for their opening fixture on a Saturday in June 2028.

The team are planned to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, if they top their group, their knockout stage opener would be held at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean commencing the elimination stage at Everton’s ground.

Championship Opening and Demonstration

The championship was launched at an gathering in central London on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were barracked as they arrived the site by about 50 protesters, who called for Israel to be removed from international football because of the Gaza crisis.

Placards were displayed with messages stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Fixture List

The opening game of the European Championship will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a match that will involve the Welsh team if they make it.

Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.

It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will cater to family audiences and help reach a more diverse set of audiences.

Host Nations

The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will enter the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through the standard process.

Venues and Knockout Stage

The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarterfinal matches played at each country’s national stadium.

The draw for the qualifiers will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.

Leadership Comment

“It will be a tournament for the fans and a celebration of everything we cherish about the football – its passion and capacity to unite individuals.”

More than three million tickets, a unprecedented number for a UEFA European Championship, are projected to be released to attendees.
