The Details Known Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
