That Grisly Cartoon Film Ending That Lingers Audiences
Out of every adult-oriented animated films I’ve ever viewed, no other has remained with me as much as the dread-soaked conclusion of a viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spain-based writer-director created a dark, somber and often savage universe with a few small , desolate twinges of hope.
Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it came from a desire to expand the medium further, the director clarified that it was actually an effort to convey a universal, cross-cultural message regarding “the mutual source of all wars.”
That message is communicated via a group of colorful pastel bears , obviously inspired by a famous series of lovable characters.
Growing up in a culture centered on warmongering as well as the defense industry, many of these creatures are consumed by exterminating the mythical beasts, due to a holy book which states the bears they were once rulers of the woods, until the horned beings expelled them.
Others did not entirely bought into the brainwashing, , would rather experiment with substances and fornicate outdoors.
In contrast to their friendly equivalents, these bright beings have visible genitals and obvious urges.
For one especially vicious, pessimistic creature, Bluey, the war against the unicorns becomes a road to control — and particularly to supremacy above his gentler, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
Bluey behaves aggressively , an apparent sociopath , and as terror takes over his unit and kills his comrades sequentially, he seizes progressively influence personally, via progressively bloody, damaging approaches.
Simultaneously, the unicorns are suffering their own nightmare, in the form of a growing, harmful creature in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it appears as a comedy,” the director said. “But then it evolves into a more dramatic and sorrowful film. And in the finale, it’s a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars begins feeling a bit like one of the most whimsical movies from an iconic animator, which find a naughty glee in allowing cartoon characters swear, fire weapons, or have intimate relations.
Then it turns into more akin to a darker film by that same creator, featuring progressively graphic violence , a tangible link to genuine suffering of war.
By the end, it becomes a complete theatrical horror carnage.
The terror that turns this a perfect Halloween movie starts much sooner than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the devoted fans of gore, for fans of intense movies who want to see a movie they’ve never seen on-screen before, and who can handle a plot that pulls no restraint.
Watch it in a dimly lit space without any distractions, and the conclusion will burrow into your mind and take up residence there.
