Warrick Stock was shot by a suspect with dreadlocks in the middle of the day, police say.

A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country grappling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old media personality was confronted by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The purpose of the shooting has not been established and no one has been arrested have taken place, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Police said that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a location near the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the property supervising the installation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, according to reports.

"Authorities believe the victim was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before running from the location on foot," a police statement said.

Security camera video reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and clad in what looked like a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but succumbed to his injuries on the opposite side of the road.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the incident.

Key evidence, like cartridges, were found at the location.

Call for Public Assistance

Police have appealed members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.

"Our information indicates they covered significant ground after the attack, and officers have been following their trail to establish their location," added an official.

Outpouring of Grief

His sister, a close relative, said the loved ones are reeling to process his death.

"I am devastated. I am shattered," she stated.
"Everyone understood he was a representative for countless citizens. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were prepared to discuss. This is a devastating blow."

She requested the public to avoid sharing graphic images from the scene, saying this was an deeply traumatic time, above all for Stock's young family.

A broadcasting director expressed that "DJ Warras was not merely a face of a reality series. He was a talented storyteller, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a warm soul who brought joy and energy to every performance. His dedication to creativity left an indefinable mark."

In a statement, the channel he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his presence, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his legacy "will be remembered".
