Meteorologists are reporting an icy start to the new year, with snow likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Continue Amid Alerts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to proceed, unlike last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so warmer clothes will be necessary," noted the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, making additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday

Moving into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travel is anticipated to be impacted.
• The public are advised to allow extra time for trips on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on public transport.

Readings Expected to Drop Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Advisories Activated

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this signified the weather could to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, wrapping up warm is utterly paramount.
