Eric Adams Will Support Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
New York City Mayor Mayor Adams declared his plan to support Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite an extended period of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Just last month, Adams had publicly condemned Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a new statement, Adams changed his position, announcing he now intends to appear with Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds significant backing.
“It's essential to energize the Black and brown communities that have experienced urban displacement on how critical this election is,” the mayor remarked.
He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.”
Election Landscape and Recent Events
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose growing support has made headlines globally and represented aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.
In a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa declared they would reject the mayor's support if extended.
Earlier this year, the mayor had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dropped in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.
At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered journalists inquiring into the support announcement by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated candidate debate.
