Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in 1931, Burton became one of the industry’s most respected broadcasters, introducing the wonder of classical music to the wider audience.
In the 1960s and 70s, he held the position of the BBC's head of music and arts and was honoured with accolades for landmark programmes like The Golden Ring.
He also founded the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a platform that uncovered soloists such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.
